Napier – St John’s Cathedral

I like Napier Cathedral. It looks a bit like a power station (I deliberately took the photos that way), and it’s a bit ordinary inside, and the stained glass is protected by other bobbly 1960s glass that messes up the photos – but I still like its simplicity and the way it gleams in the bright sunshine. And look at those louvres in the tower … it desperately needs a peal of bells!

The old brick cathedral got flattened by the 1931 earthquake, so along with the rest of Napier this one follows an Art Deco style – though I’m not convinced the rose window is very Deco.
