Visitors should beware of thinking ‘New Zealand probably hasn’t got…’ It’s a remarkable place for having everything the rest of the world has, though sometimes it’s a bit old or rattly, or cobbled together somehow. Such is the Wellington Cable Car – a little railway which runs up and down the hill to the expensive suburb of Karori, and is a vital commuter route into the city.
The cables are buried in the tracks and simply pull it along; and since there are two carriages the one going down helps pull the other one up. No visit to Wellington is complete without a trip on the Cable Car!
At the top of the track is a little Cable Car Museum which includes an old car. Evidently a wealthy lady would get a seat inside – but if you were a worker you just sat on the outside, fastened your seat belt and took your chance!
