Presbyterian churches don’t usually go out of their way to be attractive, but St Andrews on the Terrace seems to have given up altogether. Both inside and out, it seems determined to deny that beauty might do anything to inspire us to think of God and eternal destiny. It’s basically a 1900s school hall done out in sicky yellow inside and a layer of grey Sandtex all over the outside.
Oddly for a place that proclaims itself as an inclusive and open church, it doesn’t even have any emblems of gay/lesbian, ethnic, political or any other kind of diversity on show. And it’s never open when I go past … I had to sneak these photos out when I attended a concert there.
