I like Hastings. People talk a bit disparagingly of the place, perhaps comparing it with Napier – after all, the two are close, both were flattened by the 1931 earthquake, and both responded with a lot of buildings in Art Deco style. Napier of course has the prestige of a city, and is also on the coast – and is known as The Art Deco city – but Hastings is full of fine Art Deco flourishes and is small enough to be photographed in a morning, with time for an excellent lunch. Here then is my record of Hastings.
