London is littered with war memorials – you tend to collect them when you’ve been running the world for 300 years and fighting wars with most of it – but here’s a new idea: a memorial to honour all the animals that have given their service and their lives in war. It seems a laudable idea that we should stop to consider how our human madness leads to disaster for other species too; but I can’t say I’m completely convinced by the memorial itself. Perhaps the fact that it was sponsored by popular novelist Jilly Cooper and the Daily Mail newspaper doesn’t help…
