Nelson Tasman Region

No-one seems quite sure about whether Nelson and Tasman are separate regions, but it’s useful here to consider them as one. The big place is Nelson: everywhere else is seriously tiny – but it’s all very beautiful. And at least on the eastern coast the weather is seriously better than Wellington’s.

The layout is roughly driving-tour order, with links below for the main attractions. It connects from Touring Marlborough east of Nelson and runs down to Murchison, where it connects with Touring West Coast.

Nelson Cathedral

Despite its stumpy look, Nelson Cathedral is a treat

Abel Tasman National Park

A seriously good National Park

The last town at the north-west corner of the South Island

Cape Farewell

A good climb to a delightful New Zealand lighthouse

Te Waikoropupu Springs

Water so pure it’s sacred, untouchable

A beautiful retreat with a terrible story in its past

Buller Gorge Swing Bridge

A seriously terrifying cable bridge

The tour connects through Murchison to Touring West Coast.
