The quickest route from Picton to Havelock on the road to Nelson is round 3 sides of a square: Highway 1 to Blenheim, then Highway 6 to Renwick and Havelock. The alternative ‘scenic route’ is more coastal and goes over endlessly winding roads, inducing the familiar New Zealand feeling of sea-sickness and a horribly aching neck. But the views along that road are stunning, and there’s not too much other traffic – so it’s worth stopping to have a stretch and enjoy the scenery.
